Witches then and now

Women who thought, or even indicated that they possess magical powers, are called witches. According to the legend go witches dressed in black, flying them on a broom, magic brew drinks and have a helper, often in the shape of a cat. 
If something of correct, we would easily recognize witches, modern witches, but not complying with this profile. Once many women as witches persecuted just because they were single or healed the sick with herbs. Today some women deliberately choose witchcraft and then call themselves witches or Wicca.

The source of the ancient history of witches begins with magic. Especially in earlier times was all that could not explain to magic allocated. Magic is a way to the science and is based on emotion and duality. According to the practitioners of magic have surrendered three goals in the manipulation of love, the eternal youth and healing and spell.

Between 1500 and 1700 in Western Europe, there was a big fear of pagans and infidels. The church put all its power and resources for its believers to treat people of faith and pagan use. As soon as there was a witch delusion, which would last centuries. There were books with descriptions of all forms of magical practice, and torture techniques for witch trials. These books were used to accusations of witchcraft that caused more than 10 million women and men to be tortured, burned or were banned.

Especially in these times it was quite simple to accuse a woman of witchcraft if they were somewhat different from the prevailing rules and morality. Witches were seen as the major cause of infant mortality as witches had an alliance with the devil they had concluded that not yet baptized children were being sacrificed. If a harvest failed there was soon an accusing finger to a so-called witch. 

In 1486 the raids on witches began. Innocent herbal practicing  females were tortured for hours with thumbscrews and all kinds of torture tools, finally they where publicly hanged, beheaded or burned. 

Today we see a rise of witchcraft and the witches are gaining popularity. In contrast to earlier times people are not so opposed. There are books written and a modern witches are present in all layers of the population. Many people, whatever their profession or status, find strength in this life because they have lost confidence in the ecclesiastical authorities and modern gurus. Although there is a mystical atmosphere around it, the modern witches are not weird people who think that they magicians. It is a kind of spiritual and paranormal art which is used with the aim to develop themselves and helping others.

The goal that modern witches pursue is the healing power of nature to be used for positive purposes, for example, herbs, oils and gemstones. They are concerned with healing through other mesmerize, ointments and herbal beverages, candle magic, rope magic, and meditation. Also they use tarot cards for insight into the personality and the future, and they perform magical rituals to turn negative things into a positive way.

The pentagram is a symbol that many witches wear daily, often hanging from a silver chain. It is for many a talisman that protects them against evil. 

Modern witches or Wicca have a law called The Wiccan Rede. It is described as not detrimental, you should do what you want. Modern witches are also working with white magic.

Black magic is prohibited, and not without danger for the person who practices, because there is the "Witch Rule of Three: Whatever you do you will get, in triplicate, returned to you.
